The Breast Lift Procedure: Planning, Surgery, and Recovery

A nude woman cradles her left breast.

If your breasts have begun to sag as a result of having children, losing significant weight, or the natural aging process, a breast lift may be an effective cosmetic solution. Skilled plastic surgeon Dr. John W. Tyrone has more than a decade of experience performing breast lift surgeries to help patients restore firmness and achieve natural-looking bust lines. During a breast lift procedure at our Jacksonville, FL, facility, the doctor will trim excess skin and tissue, and reposition the breast and nipple higher to achieve a rejuvenated appearance. Your Breast Lift Consultation

Before we can plan your procedure, Dr. Tyrone must first evaluate your breast lift candidacy with a one-on-one consultation. During this visit, the doctor will review your health and medical records and discuss your aesthetic goals for surgery. If you meet the physical requirements, the doctor will evaluate the desired degree of lift and the elasticity of your skin in order to develop a custom treatment plan that best fits your needs. If you are also planning on having breast implants placed, the doctor will take this into consideration during his surgical planning. Dr. Tyrone will be happy to answer any questions you might have and explain the different processes in detail.

The Procedure

Breast lift surgery is usually performed on an outpatient basis using twilight sedation to help you remain comfortable and responsive. To begin, the surgeon will use drugs similar to general anesthesia, administering lower doses to lessen potential side effects and reduce risks. Once the area is prepared, the surgeon will make an incision around the areola, which helps hide scars. Depending on the degree of sagging, he may also make an incision down the length of the breast and along its crease. Dr. Tyrone will remove excess skin and tissue from your breasts, reshape the area, and in some cases, reposition the nipples to achieve the most attractive result. Patients who are also undergoing breast augmentation will then have their implants placed. After surgery, we recommend that you remain accompanied for up to 48 hours.

Recovery time is different for each patient, depending on the details of the procedure and their body’s natural healing ability. During your recovery, you should avoid strenuous activity and get plenty of rest. Patients will need to wear a compression garment or bra for several weeks to minimize discomfort and help with healing. If Dr. Tyrone placed drainage tubes near the incisions, these will typically be removed after a few days. Most women can return to normal activities within a week, though they should continue to avoid strenuous activities, as well as bending and lifting. You may resume exercise in approximately three weeks, but you should take care to increase your activity level gradually. After swelling subsides and your breasts adjust, the final results of your surgery should become more apparent.
