Enhance and Redefine Your Bust with Breast Implants

Candidates

If you concerned with small, disproportionate, or uneven breasts, you are likely a good candidate for breast augmentation. During your consultation, Dr. Tyrone will review your medical history and determine if you are healthy enough for breast implant surgery. It is important to notify our office of any existing medical conditions, medications, allergies, and smoking history on your intake forms so we are aware of any factors that could affect the success of your treatment.

Silicone Breast Implants

Mentor MemoryGel silicone breast implants are currently FDA approved for women 22 years of age and older for primary breast augmentation and for breast reconstruction. Silicone breast implants have an outer shell made of silicone rubber and are filled with a cohesive silicone gel. Mentor’s MemoryGel implants have a proprietary silicone gel filling that is cohesive and holds together, while providing a natural feel and shape for breast augmentation. Florida Breast implants generally come in three profiles (moderate, moderate plus, and high profile) which allows Dr. Tyrone to select the implant that best fits your proportions. Most patients feel that silicone breast implants provide a more natural shape and feel to the breast.

Saline Breast Implants

Mentor saline breast implants are FDA approved, and have been used safely for breast augmentation for decades. Saline breast implants have an outer shell composed of silicone rubber and are filled during surgery with injectable saline solution. Saline solution is nothing more than a balanced salt water solution similar to the solution used for contact lenses. Saline breast implants are filled during surgery, after being placed into the implant pocket. This allows the implant to be inserted through a slightly smaller incision where the final volume of the implant can be adjusted to compensate for small differences in breast size. For women with adequate breast tissue volume, good skin quality, and little breast droop, saline breast implants are a safe and affordable alternative to silicone breast implants.

Silicone vs. Saline

One of the most common questions we receive regarding breast implant surgery is: “Are silicone or saline breast implants better?” The answer to that question is not as straight forward as it may seem as every woman’s breasts are unique, and their goals may be different. Generally, most women prefer the feel and natural look of silicone breast implants over saline breast implants. However, cost, safety, monitoring, and other issues may make saline breast implants a better choice for some women. We have provided several pages on this website explaining some of the differences between silicone and saline breast implants, but we recommend you discuss which breast implant is better for you with Dr. Tyrone during your consultation. He can better explain which type of breast implant would work best for your situation, and answer any questions you may have.

Breast Implant Sizes & Shapes

Determining the “best” size for breast implant surgery is personal. Some women want a more conservative result and may be better served by a small breast implant. Other women may want a more dramatic change and may select a larger breast implant. In general, most women request breast sizes in the “C” range, and patients need to be careful going much larger or much smaller than that. Dr. Tyrone will discuss with you what size would look best on your frame, and can tell you some of the advantages and risks of going bigger or smaller. One technique that we’ve found helpful is for patients to bring in pictures of results they like. Actual “before and after” photos of breast implant patients can easily be found on the web, and will help you understand the results that can be achieved. We recommend that you look for “before” photos of patients with a similar body type, breast size and shape to you, and a result you like. Print the photos out and bring them with you to your consultation so you and Dr. Tyrone can determine what size breast implant will work best for you. Please note, pictures of women in clothing and “Playboy” photos may not show you what you can expect and are not that helpful. Actual before and after photos of real breast implant patients are your best bet.

Incisions and Placement

The two most common locations of the incisions for breast implant surgery are the crease under the breast (inframammary incision – IMF) and around the areola (peri-areolar incision). There are many factors to consider when choosing the incision location, including risks and complications, future need to replace implants, and other factors. Inframammary incisions are generally associated with lower rates of surgical complications, and is the best incision for future implant replacement, both of which need to be considered with the initial surgery. The IMF is the incision Dr. Tyrone most often recommends, but Dr. Tyrone will help you determine which incision is best for you at the time of your consultation.

Capsular Contracture

Breast augmentation is a very safe procedure, but like any surgical procedure, there are potential risks. The most common complication following breast implant surgery is capsular contracture, which involves abnormal scar tissue formation around the implant, causing it to feel hard and often distorting its shape. Before your surgery, you will have the opportunity to review all the potential surgical complications with Dr. Tyrone so that you are fully informed.

Recovery

The majority of women that have breast implant surgery with our office often comment that the “recovery was much easier than expected”. During surgery, Dr. Tyrone injects a local anesthetic to the chest wall that will help reduce the discomfort of the procedure following surgery. Most patients describe the sensation of breast augmentation as “pressure” on the chest, and chest soreness equivalent to strenuous exercising of the chest muscles. Everyone experiences pain differently, but the majority of patients only require pain medication for a few days after surgery, and most patients return to work within 7 to 10 days after surgery. You will be limited to light duty with no heavy lifting for several weeks after surgery, but if your job requires limited activity, you may return to work as soon as you feel up to it. It’s not uncommon to have motivated patients return to work a day or two after their surgery.

Over vs. Under the Muscle

Breast implants can be placed under the chest muscle (subpectoral breast augmentation) or over the breast muscle (subglandular breast augmentation). Both placement methods have their own benefits and limitations, and there are many factors that affect which method will work best for you, such as body type, implant size, and personal preference. Dr. Tyrone will discuss your breast implant placement options with you during your consultation to determine which is best.

Gummy Bear Implants

Gummy bear implants are made of cohesive silicone gel, and they offer unsurpassed durability and a natural look and feel. The high-strength silicone gel in gummy bear implants will not leak in the event of a rupture; these implants take their name from the popular "gummy bear" candy, and much like the candy, even when cut in half they retain their shape. Gummy bear implants also beautifully mimic the natural teardrop shape of the breast, as they are fuller at the bottom and tapered at the top.

Textures

Dr. Tyrone offers both smooth and coarse breast implant textures, and each type has its advantages. Patients most often select smooth-textured implants, which move easily in the breast pocket and are less likely to fold or ripple. Smooth implants are often less costly than textured implants. However, textured implants better adhere to surrounding tissues in the breast, ensuring that the implant will maintain the position it is placed in. This is particularly important if you are considering a shaped implant.

Implant Profiles

In addiction to selecting the shape, size, and placement of your implant, Dr. Tyrone will work with you to choose the right breast implant profile for optimal aesthetic enhancement. The profile of the implant refers to the degree from which it projects from the chest wall. We offer a variety of implant profiles at our practice, including low, moderate, moderate-plus, high, and ultra-high. The doctor will help you determine which profile best suits your body type and will most effectively achieve your cosmetic goals.
